The Costa de la Luz boasts the most magnificent beaches in the whole of Spain . Many people are surprised by the "greenness" of this coast. Washed by the sheer natural force of the Atlantic Ocean , virtually the entire coastline, from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Portuguese border. Fringed by mile upon mile of fine golden sand, what makes these beaches so exceptionally appealing however is that they are backed not by ribbons of modern development, but by sand dunes and marshland. By farmland and dense pine forest, by vast fields of sunflowers and rolling pastures. As this is the Atlantic coast, the weather is not as severe as the Mediterranean can be. For example, although the summers are hot, you do not get the intense Mediterranean heat. Just over half an hour or so to the north from here lies Cádiz, once Spain 's most important port for trade with the Americans.. Whilst on the subject of cities, this coast also boasts Seville , Jerez and Gibraltar . So whether you want to experience authentic flamenco in Seville , sip sherry in Jerez or even to take advantage of duty free shopping in Gibraltar the choice is there.

The name of the latter is evidence that the region was an important outpost even in Roman times. It was firmly on the map during Phoenician, Carthaginian, Roman, and Moorish times – as well as during the heyday of the Spanish empire – remains so blissfully ignored by the holiday crowds today.
